Who is a Mahj 101 lesson for?

Whether you prefer a private in-home lesson, a small group class, or a hosted Mahjong event, we offer flexible learning options to match every skill level and learning style.

Do men play mahjong?
Of course! While Mahjong has traditionally been popular among women, it’s absolutely for everyone — and we’re seeing more and more men join the game. It’s a fantastic way to connect with your partner, friends, or colleagues and enjoy a fun, social experience together.
What if I am coming alone?
If you're arriving alone, don't be nervous, because I assure you, you will not be the only one. By the time you leave, you'll feel like you know everyone in the room.
Our socials are a great way to make new friends! When you register you’ll be asked if you want to be at a faster or slower table. You’ll be assigned a table with similar speed players to meet and play with.
Do I need to bring anything to a class or event?
Not for a beginner class! Charlotte Mahjong will provide all the tiles necessary for you to enjoy and learn the game. We are not exclusive tile promoters. We believe in promoting unique artists and various Mahjong companies. Tiles should be reflective of a players personality.
Mahjong socials: Please remember to bring your NMJL card. If you're new and your card hasn't arrived yet, you may borrow one of ours!
What if I am a beginner? A Mahjong event sounds scary!
Events will have descriptions of experience level required. If you're new to Mahjong and have taken a MAHJ 101 class but still learning we recommend coming to an event that says "instructor lead" or "instructor guided". Many of our events when you register it will ask what speed of play you would like, and you'll be assigned a table of players at similar speed/experience level of Mahjong as you.
So beginners are welcome at mahjong open play socials?
Yup! For our socials, you just need to have taken a Mahj 101 course from any group, or be experienced and knowledgable of playing. An instructor is available to answer questions or give line suggestions
